HISTORY

ASPEN was born around 100 years ago, spending the first 25 years of her life as a girl named KATHERINE. this very first identity would end up giving her a predisposed hatred for humanity from a very young age.while ASPEN is most often referred to as simply 'THE SHAPESHIFTER', it would be far more accurate to call her a demon of sorts. KATHERINE was born from an affair between her mother, MARIE, and her mother's first love, JACK. unbeknownst to MARIE, JACK performed a ritual around KATHERINE's conception, dooming MARIE to carry a prophesized "god of the NEW WORLD". MARIE thought he was crazy, and that the child they conceived would be a regular human. KATHERINE wasraised as MARIE and ARTHUR's daughter, with nobody but MARIE knowing the truth about her father.due to her family's affluent nature, KATHERINE was constantly reminded to mind her etiquette and forced to take various lessons refining her classiness. KATHERINE found these to be terribly boring, as she was far more interested in having fun. from birth, she had a natural inclination towards chaos.

after decades of maintaining various powerful identities, a particular human caught her eye. KOZLOV, a brilliant scientist and medical professional, struck her as the type of man who could help her figure out what exactly she is. she knew he was lonely and desperate for validation and affection, and so she created the identity named NADJA so that she could approach him. they quickly entered a romantic relationship, where he eventually discovered her true nature and agreed to research her.KOZLOV made lots of progress, though was never truly able to reach a breakthrough. time was running out, and he knew that NADJA would soon leave and move on as she always did. he couldn't stomach this truth, and so he consumed some of the "ichor" from inside her, becoming the third person to ever become ruined. NADJA left him shortly after.after twenty more years of her usual behavior, ASPEN caught wind of an underfunded, nearly debunked effort by the government to find her. she almost didn't intervene, but then she noticed KOZLOV was a part of the search. to counterbalance the legitimate useful information he brought to the table, she decides to join the team with the help of a CLOSE FRIEND to interfere with their efforts, posing as a detective interested in finding... well, herself. she throws them off of her own trail and forges evidence and whatnot, all while watching in amusement as they put their heads together to figure out the whereabouts of the 'evil creature' they're looking for.

APPEARANCE

ASPEN is a slim, curvy girl of a relatively short stature. she has a pale complexion with freckles along her cheeks and the bridge of her nose. she has long, waist-length purple hair with black streaks throughout, her hair deliberately styled into flowy spikes. she has two long tufts of striped hair that fall over her chest, and spiked bangs that lay over her forehead. her eyes are a yellowish-green, and often appear narrowed and cunning. she wears heavy makeup at most times, typically consisting of purple eyeshadow, eyeliner, and pink lipstick. the colors of her makeup may change depending on her clothing.ASPEN wears a black, cropped tank-top and low-rise ripped blue jeans. the straps of her black thong are visible on her hips. she wears calf-length black boots and a dog-tag necklace with no engravings on it.when not wearing her main outfit, ASPEN's fashion typically consists of revealing, y2k/emo oriented clothing. she likes form-fitting clothes, ripped clothes, jewelry, jeans, edgy patterns, and dark colors. she tends to avoid clothing that conceal her form or consists of too many bright colors.

TALENTS AND ABILITIES

ASPEN's body is full of malleable black goop, called "ichor". she is able to control it for the most part, changing her appearance to keep herself from being discovered for what she is. when this ichor is consumed, either through ingestion or insertion through a wound, a person becomes "ruined". some symptoms of this include intense mood swings, violent outbursts, complete lack of fear, and a complicated mixture of hatred and obsession towards ASPEN due to the ichor wanting to "reassimilate" with her.ASPEN's abilities as a shapeshifter are severely underdeveloped thanks to her only using them to shift identities every few years. because of this, utilizing them renders her extremely dizzy and may even induce fainting or vomiting. she is purposefully stifling her potential and limiting her abilities in favor of playing human.whenever ASPEN experiences too much anger or sadness, she struggles to maintain her physical form and may "dematerialize". during this, her face and other parts of her body may disintegrate into ichor, struggling to keep its shape. the intensity of this depends completely on the intensity of the emotion she is experiencing.

PERSONALITY

due to ASPEN's susceptibility to dematerialization, she has trained herself to be apathetic and unemotional. unfortunately, this has resulted in a deep-rooted repression issue and an inability to handle delicate and emotional situations. ASPEN does not know how to have serious talks, and she never discusses her past. when she changes identities, she disregards the last one completely, and never thinks about it again. as much as she can, anyway.ASPEN can come off as very irritating, as she often goes out of her way to bully, annoy, and antagonize others for her own amusement. at the same time, she can be very charismatic and fun. she loves the company of others and is not often found alone.ASPEN is an entertainer at heart, and enjoys being the center of attention. although she can be off-putting and mean, it's hard not to be captivated by her when she makes an effort to target someone. especially considering her history of taking on almost exclusively famous identities. with her current identity, ASPEN, she has no fame or status. this sometimes bothers her, as she is used to worship.

RELATIONSHIPS

KOZLOV [EX-LOVER/COWORKER]
"glasses, nutcase, four-eyes, freakshow"ASPEN (back then known as NADJA) and KOZLOV were once lovers, roughly 20 years ago. nowadays, KOZLOV is hellbent on tracking down his lost love, unaware that the same woman is accompanying him in that very investigation. KOZLOV makes ASPEN feel uncomfortable. he is the only human she has ever interacted with through multiple identities. she hates the ruined, and is disgusted with his behaviors, but she also strangely pities him, being the only person to know that he's sick.KOZLOV is the only person ASPEN refers to with multiple nicknames. this is because ASPEN's nicknames usually originate from her first thought when looking at a person. unfortunately, when she looks at KOZLOV, she thinks of his name. because of this, she often messes up and uses a variety of nicknames, not wanting to use his real name.

TABI [BEST FRIEND/COWORKER]
"gadget"ASPEN has had connections with TABI's family for generations, beginning long ago with her founding KATAKLYZM with TABI's great grandfather, CHARLIE. TABI is unaware of this. ASPEN selected TABI to help her infiltrate the investigation because she trusts TABI on account of her family. TABI is the only person who knows ASPEN is the shapeshifter. ASPEN likes hanging out with TABI, but has a certain emotional distance from her that TABI doesn't seem to notice.

SYLVIE [BOSS/FRIEND]
"boss-man"ASPEN does not know that SYLVIE is a direct descendant of CECIL, who she killed over 80 years ago, and that this murder is the motivation behind his search. she just thinks he's a crazy old conspiracy theorist who happened to latch to a lucky guess. she disliked him at first, but now finds him endearing and likes him.

JASPER [CLOSE FRIEND]
"blondie"JASPER was a close friend of TABI, and now is in a friend group with ASPEN and TABI. JASPER is a prominent member of KATAKLYZM. ASPEN enjoys JASPER's presence and thinks he's lots of fun. he's entertaining and always down for some trouble, which ASPEN can't help but love. he has also helped her obtain fake identification documents.

HISTORY

KOZLOV was raised in moscow, russia by his mother, SASHA. SASHA was a cold and bitter woman who resented KOZLOV, because KOZLOV's father abandoned her shortly after his birth. she never stopped blaming him, and spent his entire childhood belittling, demeaning, and abusing him. the way SASHA raised KOZLOV caused him to be very timid and self-loathing.KOZLOV decided that he'd earn SASHA's approval one way or another, and so he always did his best at school. he took a sincere interest in chemistry, biology, medicine, and other areas of study. no matter how much he excelled at school, SASHA never improved her treatment of him.because KOZLOV sunk all of his energy into studying, he severely lacked social skills and struggled to connect to his peers. he faced frequent bullying from his classmates, which only worsened his already diminished sense of self-worth. he never made any friends throughout his childhood and grew up incredibly isolated and without any support.by his early twenties, he was on track to become a medical doctor. even still, SASHA still despised him. he'd never felt so unfulfilled and directionless. he was beginning to lose hope that he'd ever earn her love. that's when he met NADJA.

after months of studying her with little progress, KOZLOV was growing scared that NADJA would soon leave and change identities again. even though he insisted he could cope with this eventually happening, he couldn't. he just couldn't part with happiness. so he decided to ingest some of the "ichor" from NADJA's body, becoming "ruined". this drove him into a turbulent spiral into insanity, and his adoration for her twisted into something horrific. he loved her just as much as he hated her, and his experiments grew more unethical, to say the least.NADJA found out KOZLOV had consumed some of her, despite her warning him not to. it was no surprise that she left soon after, but the part of her that he'd consumed had formed a debilitating connection to her both physically and psychologically. restless, he looked for her and researched, unintentionally garnering success and wealth along the way. now a respected scientist, he couldn't even remotely appreciate his success in her absence. when he caught wind of a small, underfunded, nearly debunked government investigatory effort to find her, he abandoned everything to join it. he left his success and acclaim in russia and moved to the united states to live in NOPLACE VALLEY without any hesitation.now, KOZLOV is on this team trying to pin down the whereabouts, past and present, of the allusive shapeshifter that the team believes may be a threat to society itself. he often fluctuates between swooning over how loving their relationship was and spewing lies of how horrible she was when they were together. little does he know, that same shapeshifter had joined the team under a new identity. even if he can't quite make the connection that ASPEN is NADJA.

KOZLOV is a tall, lanky, pale man of an extremely tall stature. his entire body from the neck-down is entirely covered in bandages due to KOZLOV's consistent self-harm habit, both intentional and unintentional. beneath his bandages, he is covered in cuts, bruises, and carvings: namely NADJA's name on his ribs in russian.KOZLOV has sunken, wide eyes with dark eyebags. his cheek-bones are prominent and he's got some wrinkles due to his old age: namely crows-feet and smile lines. his eyes are bright green and his pupils are always tiny. KOZLOV is always smiling, and his teeth are extremely crooked.KOZLOV has short brunette hair that is always gelled back. it is styled messily and he always has one large strand sticking up atop of his head. because he is "ruined", KOZLOV lacks the proper capacity to experience fear. this can mistakenly appear as bravery or a lack of self-preservation. he is quick to throw himself into dangerous situations, or get himself hurt without hesitating.after NADJA abandoned him, KOZLOV was able to earn himself widespread recognition for his contributions to medicine and science alike. ironically, he could not savor these accomplishments in NADJA's absence, even if he'd craved this attention his entire life. he has won many awards and certificates, and he is credited for many advancements in these studies. he is very knowledgeable about a variety of subjects and very wealthy as a result of his success.after NADJA left, KOZLOV got a knack for writing poetry. he lacked creativity before becoming ruined, and now finds comfort in writing about his feelings in his new crazed mindset. despite his lackluster english skills, his poems can be rather remarkable.

PERSONALITY

prior to becoming ruined, KOZLOV was a brilliant and passionate, albeit incredibly eccentric and socially awkward individual who struggled to make friends due to his tough childhood. he craved validation and attention so badly that he was absolutely smitten at the first sign of it from NADJA.after becoming ruined, KOZLOV is now an erratic, terrifying man. he fluctuates dramatically from euphoria, to fury, to misery. he can go from laughing maniacally to sobbing in seconds. he often punches holes in walls and can sometimes even become violent towards ASPEN.beneath all of the madness plaguing his mind, KOZLOV still craves friendship and validation, often looking for this in ASPEN, TABI , and SYLVIE. he always wants to hang out with them and feel included in their lives. he is incredibly lonely. being ruined also often renders him delirious and confused, as his brain function is inhibited.

RELATIONSHIPS

ASPEN [EX-LOVER/COWORKER]KOZLOV has no idea that ASPEN is NADJA. regardless, the presence of ichor in his body makes him inexplicably obsessed with her. this fluctuates between a weird crush and an undying hatred, where he occasionally goes as far as to injure her in bursts of explosive anger.KOZLOV stalks ASPEN, and panics when he is unable to track her down at his whim. he is always trying desperately to figure out what he can do to make her like him, scheming and daydreaming about making her his, all while anguishing that his lost love NADJA would be mad at him for moving on.

TABI [FRIEND/COWORKER]KOZLOV gets frustrated with how often TABI is accompanying ASPEN. he often argues with her, though never physically attacks her like he would ASPEN, as TABI is likely to retaliate and attack him back. they tend to fight like siblings, and despite KOZLOV's jealousy towards her, he likes her and considers her to be his friend.

SYLVIE [BOSS/FRIEND]KOZLOV often argues with SYLVIE over their disagreements about the shapeshifter. SYLVIE thinks she's an evil monster, KOZLOV thinks she's the one that got away. SYLVIE thinks she's responsible for dozens of murders, KOZLOV doesn't think she'd do that. they argue in circles about these things, and yet KOZLOV still views SYLVIE as a friend.

BENJIE ["FRIEND"]because BENJIE works so many various jobs around NOPLACE, KOZLOV runs into him often. unfortunately for BENJIE, KOZLOV is very lonely, and has decided that BENJIE's habitual friendliness means that they're best buds. KOZLOV often goes to BENJIE's jobs to bother him, wanting to rant about ASPEN or NADJA. BENJIE is too kind to tell him to stop.

TABI's mother died before TABI ever got to get to know her. TABI grew up in NOPLACE VALLEY under the care of her father, LUIZ, a scumbag street-racer who is a prominent member of the KATAKLYZM criminal syndicate. his grandfather, CHARLIE, founded the syndicate. TABI grew up being taught how to defy the law, and she bonded with her father over their shared passion for cars and street-racing.as a child, TABI hated her father's criminal ways, and wished LUIZ would've put more focus into her rather than his career as a criminal. TABI's hatred for LUIZ's career was validated when LUIZ died at the hands of another syndicate member over a street-race gone wrong. TABI inherited his necklace and cherishes it very dearly. now orphaned at only 13 years old, TABI decidedly took care of herself instead of entering the care system. only a year later, she met JASPER through the KATAKLYZM syndicate, and he made her fake identification documents so she could work at 14-years-old.TABI worked as a mechanic for 7 years, dabbling occasionally in her own technology and inventions of her own. despite wanting to remain widely uninvolved with the KATAKLYZM syndicate, JASPER often beckoned her back, fascinated with her high-standing in the organization because of her family.

PERSONALITY

TABI comes off as incredibly proud and self-assured, yet also rather rude and abrasive. she's very outspoken and never afraid to tell you exactly what she thinks. TABI can become agitated very easily, and she's prone to angry outbursts and frustration. TABI disguises her many insecurities with an arrogant demeanor, making herself appear egotistical to conceal how uncertain she truly is when it comes to her value as a human being.despite constantly flaunting how talented and brilliant she is, TABI feels like a failure due to where she ended up in life, a lowly criminal. she does a lot of drinking to avoid thinking too hard about her life. she feels deep down that she is an insufferable, obnoxious person, though she feels that she is unable to change.TABI can be very impulsive and one-track-minded, and it's hard to talk her down once she has made up her mind about something. she often struggles to see other people's perspectives on things she disagrees with them about.

SYLVIE [BOSS/FRIEND]when TABI first joined the investigation, she thought SYLVIE was nothing but a sad, stuck-up old man. over time, she grew to enjoy his presence and now cares for him deeply. she still cannot help but look down on SYLVIE for his rigid attitude.

JASPER [CLOSE CHILDHOOD FRIEND]JASPER and TABI met when they were children through the KATAKLYZM criminal syndicate. they've been remarkably close since, as they've known each other for a very long time and share an interest in guns and crimes. HISTORY

many decades ago, SYLVIE's great grandfather CECIL was murdered by THE SHAPESHIFTER. CECIL's son, ALEXANDER, has been searching for her since, seeking justice. he has spent his entire life searching for her. when ALEXANDER had a daughter, he neglected her in favor of his search. ALEXANDER's daughter became addicted to drugs as a result. eventually, ALEXANDER's daughter had SYLVIE. because his daughter was incapable of raising a baby, ALEXANDER took in SYLVIE and raised him in NOPLACE VALLEY.ALEXANDER knew he was getting older. with no worthwhile progress to prove for his search, he knew he had to pass the torch so that CECIL's legacy would not die. he raised SYLVIE as a protégé, convincing SYLVIE that the investigation would soon be his responsibility. SYLVIE took this to heart, and had very few passions or aspirations growing up knowing he'd eventually end up an investigator and had no reason to explore his interests. SYLVIE admired ALEXANDER, though grew up lonely and neglected much like his mother did.

KOZLOV was the first to take SYLVIE seriously. he travelled from moscow to NOPLACE VALLEY to meet with SYLVIE. then, KOZLOV revealed to SYLVIE that he was in possession of several samples of "ichor", the black goopy matter that THE SHAPESHIFTER is made of. KOZLOV joined SYLVIE on his investigation, albeit with much resistance from SYLVIE. as much as SYLVIE wanted to continue working alone, he desperately needed KOZLOV's evidence.SYLVIE and KOZLOV butted heads a lot over what they believed to be true about THE SHAPESHIFTER. SYLVIE believed that THE SHAPESHIFTER was responsible for the murders occurring as of recently around NOPLACE VALLEY. KOZLOV thought her to be incapable of such cruelty. they just could not reach an agreement.eventually, ASPEN and TABI joined the investigation, claiming to be mandated by the government to contribute to the search. frustrated and confused, SYLVIE insisted they were not needed. but they refused to leave, and KOZLOV took a weird fixation with ASPEN, also insisting the two new girls stay.defeated and upset, SYLVIE hated his new team at first. he was used to being alone, after all. but over time, he grew to adore all three of them as if they were his family.

APPEARANCE

while SYLVIE believes he has a knack for private investigator work, he truthfully does not. he has no idea that ASPEN is THE SHAPESHIFTER, TABI is a criminal, and KOZLOV is ruined. his true talents lie in arts: as SYLVIE is a talented and passionate painter. he never got to properly pursue this in life due to pressure to become a detective.SYLVIE's paintings usually consist of scenic and landscapes, painted in desaturated tones that are easy on the eyes. SYLVIE eventually begins to venture into portrait-work as well, only after growing fonder of his team, which makes it easier for him to see the beauty in himself and others.he also shows promise in his gardening abilities, maintaining a decent flower garden around the exterior of his house as well as a vegetable/spice garden in his backyard.

SYLVIE is grumpy and overly serious, but also strikingly intelligent and analytical. he can be pretty stubborn and it's difficult to talk him down from any of his thoughts and beliefs. he's not afraid to argue for how he thinks things should be done, and can become frustrated if these debates go on for too long.SYLVIE is highly independent and strongly rejects the notion of needing others. this mindset originated from his rough childhood, and deep down he yearns for connection and affection. he's secretly a hopeless romantic and an incredibly lonely man. finally, at 12, JASPER couldn't take it anymore. he plead with VEE to escape with him, and despite their joint fear and guilt, they did. it was the most terrifying thing they'd ever done, and it created a deep sibling bond between them that could only be described as codependence.now free, the two fled to NOPLACE VALLEY, where JASPER found the KATAKLYZM criminal syndicate. after being raised in such a stifling environment, the idea of breaking all of the rules of society sounded incredible to JASPER. he quickly became accustomed to the criminal life at a very young age, much to VEE's dismay. this lifestyle, however, proved necessary to keeping them afloat. JASPER's exceptional scamming, pick-pocketing, and embezzling skills supported the young twins. JASPER quickly made many connections in the syndicate and was noticed for his skills despite his young age.through the syndicate, JASPER met TABI , another troubled and recently orphaned young teen. JASPER used his forgery skills to make her falsified documents, helping her get onto her feet. as a result, the two of them became very close friends. JASPER admired TABI for her prominent standing in the KATAKLYZM syndicate.JASPER began transitioning from female to male at 15, which was supported by VEE and TABI. this is when he finally seemed to hit his stride. now far more confident and satisfied with himself, JASPER began to live life to the fullest as a man.

VEE ended up taking an immense interest in ghosts, cryptids, and conspiracy theories to fill the void, as the idea of an unseen being brought her comfort. because of VEE's non-traditional interests and fixations, she has struggled to make friends, as most people see her as crazy.

VAL spent a majority of his childhood in HERRING, raised by his stay-at-home mother ANGELA and his office-worker father JIMMY. by all accounts, his childhood was very normal. until JIMMY earned himself life in prison by murdering an innocent woman, his coworker. VAL was only 9 when this happened, and it tore his world apart. his father, who he idolized, turned out to be a monster. this betrayal gave VAL a strange obsession with justice and enforcing the law.VAL and ANGELA grew very close after this, working through the pain together and rebuilding their lives without JIMMY in it. ANGELA got a factory job to support herself and VAL as a single mother. VAL studied hard with dreams to join the police force. he adored his mom, a true-and-tried mama's boy.despite the rocky beginning, VAL felt that his life was looking up. he was an excellent student and a good kid, and he was sure that good things were meant to happen to good people. this only made it hurt extra bad when ANGELA was diagnosed with glioblastoma and given two years to live. VAL was only 17.

he spent the next two years in and out of the hospital, visiting ANGELA. he struggled to accept that he was going to lose her, especially with his father in prison. with her gone, he'd have nobody. ANGELA remained strong and encouraging through her illness, urging VAL to keep studying and pursue his dream of joining the police academy.when ANGELA died, it marked a shift in VAL's personality. he was obsessed with his idea of right and wrong, and sought out to correct as much injustice as he could to try and fill the void her absence left. he breezed through police academy and quickly scored a job on the NOPLACE VALLEY police force, where he has remained for over a decade.VAL is possibly the only competent officer on the team. apart from his chief, none of the other officers could care less about preventing or avenging crime. he singlehandedly carries the police force on his back.VAL spends his days patrolling, tending to NOPLACE's jail, and enforcing the law. he is involved in an ongoing chase between himself and prolific KATAKLYZM member, JASPER.
